After a meeting with Reading Mayor Wally Scott, staff and representatives from State Representative Mark Rozzi’s office and the City Council office along with John Eustice and Laura Reppert, representing Championship Cycling, Inc, the Mayor expressed the belief that the Reading 120 race scheduled for Saturday, September 9th is on for 2017. Mayor Scott said, “I thank the County Commissioners for showing us the need to explore the continuation of the race here in Berks County.”

At this meeting the glitches from the 2016 race were discussed, along with objectives to overcome those glitches. Representative Rozzi said, “I am feeling very positive about the future of the Reading 120. During the meeting, race organizers cleared up a lot of the confusion surrounding the race and now that we are past this bump in the road, I am confident that Reading and Berks County will again host this international event which we can truly be proud of. “

Race organizers John Eustice and Laura Reppert explained the importance of this internationally acclaimed race and the need for someone within the racing community develop the concept and design for the race and the importance of having the local community handle organizational issues.

Mayor Scott suggested establishing an oversight committee consisting of representatives from each municipality that the race will go through and others to provide complete transparency and inclusion in the process. Mayor Scott said, “The lack of transparency with the race last year has left many unanswered questions, creating a ‘he said, she said’ situation. While we cannot undo the issues that occurred with the last race, we will make sure those issues do not reoccur.”

The proposed route for the Reading 120 may include Reading, Lower Alsace, Alsace Twp., Mt. Penn, Exeter, St. Lawrence and Oley. The City will be reaching out to each municipality, the County and the State delegation to get their buy-in for the 2017 race and to ask them to refer a representative to serve on the oversight committee. Mayor Scott is hopeful that this year’s race will continue to grow and put a positive light on the City of Reading and the participating municipalities. Later Mayor Scott learned that the Reading Eagle Company is in total support for the continuation of the race here in Berks County.

Representative Rozzi said, “I’d like to commend Mayor Scott and City Council for their unwavering support in providing local residents this unique experience which will have a profound impact for years to come.”
